The corpus on the cross was presented to the Catholic Players Guild by Raymond Lang, the mayor of Oberammergau when he visited the mission at Brighton Beach. The cross was presented to commemorate the First Passion play presented in Durban based on the Oberammergau Passion Play. Fr. Noel Coughlan was instrumental in obtaining the rights to present the play in Durban and was Parish Priest at Brighton Beach at the time. It was shipped over in parts and assembled on its arrival at the Bluff. It was placed in the new Church of St. Joseph and St. Brendan until the church was sold. It is now a prominent part of the new St. Francis Xavier Parish Church.
