The Liturgical Chair

(Taken from the Parish Newsletter February 1966)

With the implementation in Liturgical Practice during Holy Mass, authorised during the proceedings of Vatican Council II, now taking place in Catholic Churches throughout the Republic, it is worthwhile to note that possibly the first chair to be designed and made for a specific purpose to be used in Durban, will soon be installed in St. Joseph’s and St. Brendan’s Church, Fynnland. The chair has been made as a memorial to the deceased parents of Mr and Mrs John Wilkinson of the Bluff. The design is based on a 10th Century English Ecclesiastical Chair. It was made in the workshops of the Benedictine Hospital, Nongoma, Zululand.

The chair has on the front a shield bearing the “PAX” symbol of the Benedictine Order. At the rear of the chair is a plague reading “ Pray for the repose of the souls of Ellen Wilkinson , John Wilkinson, Rose E. Craven and Frank Blackburn Craven”.
